JOB DESCRIPTION AND SPECIFICATIONS

JOB TITLE: Adult Services Intern
DEPARTMENT: Adult Services
JOB CLASSIFICATION: Pay Grade 7
HOURS PER WEEK: 15
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Temporary (January 5 - August 31, 2009), Part-Time, Non-Exempt
RATE OF PAY: $10.52/hour
RESPONSIBLE TO: Adult and Teen Programming Coordinator
SCHEDULE: Flexible; some evenings and weekends required

GENERAL SUMMARY:
As a graduate student pursuing a degree in library science, provides assistance to department patrons in an effort to gain "real world experience" and learn under the guidance of experienced staff members.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
(E) = essential function

  1. Regularly addresses basic questions posed by the patrons at the two Adult Services reference desks (Fiction/Reference and Audiovisual) and assists in locating desired materials; conducts searches on computer catalog; directs patrons with involved questions to appropriate resource. (E)
  1. Performs various tasks to aid in the flow of activities in the department, including pulling books for programs or displays, searching lost items, and creating displays and creating booklists.
  1. Assists in the implementation of Teen and Adult programs.
  1. Performs other functions assigned to position to insure effective and smooth continuity of the operations of the Library.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree, pursuing a Master’s in Library Science (MLS)
  2. Completion of at least one graduate course in Reference Materials and Services or at least 1 year of library experience, working in a reference or public services setting.
  3. Availability for a minimum of two semesters
  4. General knowledge of library procedures and reference sources
  5. Basic computer aptitude
  6. Good interpersonal skills for interacting with other employees, patrons of all ages and education levels and other outside contacts
  7. Ability to learn and work with various office equipment
  8. Good listening and communication skills
  9. Ability to be pleasant and tactful with the public
  10. Ability to deal with regular interruptions and multiple tasks
WORKING CONDITIONS:

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Limited supervision with choice in selection, development and coordination of methods to use; may occasionally develop own methods to perform work.
