Main Library Renovation Project, 2009-2010

Watch the RollerGirls helping with the Children's renovation!

The renovation project will:

address 2008 flood damage in Children’s Services and enhance Preschool Exploration Center
create a Drive-Up Window that allows patrons to pick up and drop off materials without getting out of their cars
consolidate circulation for more self-checkout and self-pickup of holds
add space for the Movies & Music collection.
improve the ability of staff to support public computer use.
separate and provide space for quiet and noisy library use—public computing, magazine reading, individual and group study, socializing...
rearrange adult literacy space (VITAL) to better support use by groups

Work will be done in phases as funding permits. Replacing flooring destroyed in the 2008 flood and worn out after 12 years of heavy use in Children’s Services is a top priority.

Aging Facility, Growing Demand

The Main Library on Kirkwood was built in 1970. It was expanded and renovated in 1997. Since the renovation and expansion 12 years ago:

annual number of items checked out has increased from just over a million to almost 2.5 million.
visits to the library by patrons have increased to over a million per year.
the Main Library has more than doubled the number of public access computers.
Movies & Music collection is now almost 50% of circulation

The library has responded to increased demand by adding more self-service options, getting more efficient, and reconfiguring our spaces for processing.
