Through the Looking Glass: Shifting Surfaces and Altered Perceptions in Art and Architecture
Please join us for a discussion led by graduate students from the IU Art History Department. The interactive talks will present images and ideas as jumping off points for conversation. Topics include:
Gilding the Invisible: The Phenomenology of Maya Lin’s Gallery Work by René Gehr
Maya Lin creates art that both elicits and depends on bodily proximity to the viewer. She has a deep conviction to facilitate a perceptual experience of landscape in order to draw attention to what people normally overlook.
Touching and Being Touched: Hapticity, Phenomenology, and the Nature of Play by Lindsey Hansen
Learn how toys create an affinity for touch and manipulation, and how this affinity for touch impacts the relationship between player and object.
William Rimmer and the Male Nude by Emilee Mathews
Rimmer's fascinating background and writings reveal multitudinous layers of personal and cultural meaning portrayed in his oeuvre.
Dressing Up and Acting Out: Photography, Costume Balls and the Performance of Femininity in America’s Gilded Age by Erin Pauwels
This talk presents photographic portraits from the New York Historical Society showing American women dressed up as bees, witches and knights in shining armor for the Vanderbilt Costume Ball of 1883. Such events were popular pastimes in the late nineteenth-century U.S., and while dressing up certainly was about having fun, it also offered women of this time period a rare opportunity for personal expression.
