CATS has over 10,000 - 15,000 tapes in the Public Access collection, 3,000 of which are currently being played. Programs not playing are archived for historical purposes.

The tapes in the archives are of several different formats that have been popular over the years. Several hundred are reel-to-reel tapes, or beta, two formats that are rare these days. The majority of the rest of the tapes are 1/2" VHS.

At a future date, CATS hopes to "save" some of the tapes in the Archives that are either reel-to-reel or beta, since these are the oldest tapes in our collection. Over the years, videotape deteriorates to the point that the videotape itself crumbles. Before that happens, CATS hopes to copy the old videotapes from the reel-to-reel, or beta tapes, to a digital format, thus preserving a priceless piece of Monroe County history.

Fortunately, most of the tapes in CATS' collection are quite usable. In fact, anyone can come to CATS and watch our programs here in one of our viewing rooms.
