Learn More About Summer Reading

MCPL's FREE Summer Reading Program combines weekly activities and special events to help children find fun things to read and do this summer: May 23 - August 12. Children can participate in the Summer Reading Program at the Main and Ellettsville libraries and on the Bookmobile!

Children of all ages can play the Summer Reading Game! The program is designed for school-age children who have completed grades K-6, but families can adapt the program for pre-readers. Read aloud to your infants and toddlers. Pick up a Summer Reading Guide for any child who would like to earn points and collect prizes. Record your progress in the Guide in the way that suits you best!

Library staff start giving out Guides on Friday, May 23. Guides are available during open hours for as long as supplies last. Headed out of town before the start of the Summer Reading program? Sign up online (starting May 21st) and print out the game board. Bring the game board with you next time you are able to visit the library, and we'll award the prizes you've earned. Read below for complete instructions on how to play the game.

How do you play the Summer Reading Game?
Any time you complete a Summer Reading activity, color in one bug on the game board to record the point you earned. Win Prizes As You Earn Points
Collect prizes at 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 points!
At 25 points, you get to choose a paperback book from our prize collection! You may be able to finish the Summer Reading Game faster than a dragonfly rushes by - but there's no need to speed. Prizes do not become available until the dates given below:
5 pt prize starts Monday, June 2
10 pt prize starts Monday, June 9
15 pt. prize starts Monday, June 16
20 pt prize starts Monday, June 23
25 pt. prize starts Monday, July 7
You have until Tuesday, August 12 to collect all prizes.

What's the best way to play?
It's up to you! You can earn all your Summer Reading Game points just by reading books, or you can investigate different sections: Books, the Weekly Challenge, the Computer Questions and Library Programs. Discover your own way to win! You can even make the Summer Reading Game more challenging if you want. For example, you could choose to read two books before coloring in a bug on the game board.

The Library's Summer Reading Program is all about reading for fun and enjoying the library as a fantastic place to visit during the summer. It's no secret. We think you're a high flyer anytime you visit the library!

Funding for programs is provided by the Friends of the Library
