Learn More About Summer
Reading
MCPL's
FREE Summer Reading Program combines weekly activities and
special events to help children find fun things to read and do this summer:
May 23 - August 12. Children can participate
in the Summer Reading Program at the Main and Ellettsville libraries and on
the Bookmobile!
Children of all ages can play the Summer Reading Game! The program is
designed for school-age children who have completed grades K-6, but families
can adapt the program for pre-readers. Read aloud to your infants and toddlers.
Pick up a Summer Reading Guide for any child who would like to earn points and
collect prizes. Record your progress in the Guide in the way that suits you
best!
Library staff start giving out Guides on Friday, May 23. Guides are available
during open hours for as long as supplies last. Headed out of town before the
start of the Summer Reading program?
Sign
up online (starting May 21st) and print out the game board. Bring the game board with you next
time you are able to visit the library, and we'll award the prizes you've earned.
Read below for complete instructions on how to play the game.
How do you play the Summer Reading Game?
Any time you complete a Summer Reading activity, color in one bug
on the game board to record the point you earned.
- Read or listen to books, magazines, or audiobooks. (Earn up to 25 points!)
Choose to earn a point when you:
a.) finish reading a book
b.) read to yourself for 30 minutes OR
c.) have someone read to you for 30 minutes
Write down the title you read or listened to on the "Reading List"
section of the guide. Librarians love to recommend good books. We can help
you find more titles you will like. Ask us!
- Take the Weekly Challenge (Earn up to 8 points!)
All library locations will have a weekly challenge activity for you to try
when you visit anytime during the week. Write down the answer to the challenge
on one of the lines on the "Weekly Challenge" section of the guide.
With each answer to the challenge, you earn a point and get to color in
one of the bugs on the game board.
Take the first challenge between Friday, May 23 and Sunday, June 1. A new
challenge will appear every Monday after that. You may only earn one challenge
point each week.
- Try the Computer Question (Earn up to 8 points!)
Connect to our website: www.mcpl.info/childrens/srp08.html
and find the question posted on the Computer Question page. Write down the
correct answer in the "Computer Question" section in your guide
and then color in one of the bugs on the game board.
Try the first question between May 23 and June 1. A new question will appear
every Monday after that. Questions remain posted all summer, so you can
catch up anytime!
- Attend a Library Program (Earn up to 8 points!)
Get a clue at the library by attending special events at the Main Library
or Ellettsville Branch, or by visiting the Bookmobile. Write down the name
of the program you attended on the "Library Program" section of
the guide. For every program you attend, you also get to color in one of
the bugs on the game board.
We offer special events and activities for children and
their families throughout the summer. Some of our events
are drop-ins that don't require registration, but some of these events require advance registration.
Sign-up for Summer Events begins one month
before the date of the event. View our schedule of programs on the Web at:
www.mcpl.info/childrens/programs.html
Sign up online, or call the Children's Dept. at 349-3100.
Win Prizes As You Earn Points
Collect prizes at 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 points!
At 25 points, you get to choose a paperback book from our prize collection!
You may be able to finish the Summer Reading Game faster than a dragonfly rushes
by - but there's no need to speed. Prizes do not become available until the
dates given below:
5 pt prize starts Monday, June 2
10 pt prize starts Monday, June 9
15 pt. prize starts Monday, June 16
20 pt prize starts Monday, June 23
25 pt. prize starts Monday, July 7
You have until Tuesday, August 12 to collect all prizes.
What's the best way to play?
It's up to you! You can earn all your Summer Reading Game points just by reading
books, or you can investigate different sections: Books, the Weekly Challenge,
the Computer Questions and Library Programs. Discover your own way to win! You
can even make the Summer Reading Game more challenging if you want. For example,
you could choose to read
two books before coloring in a bug
on the game board.
The Library's Summer Reading Program is all about reading for fun and enjoying
the library as a fantastic place to visit during the summer. It's no secret.
We think you're a high flyer anytime you visit the library!
