I am not typically interested in teen novels of the romance variety. However, while searching the internet for popular teen novels I noticed that Sarah Dessen and her many novels seemed to be "topping the charts". So I decided to see what all the fuss was about.
I actually quite liked Lock and Key. You will notice that I did not label it as a romance. I didn't really feel that it was. While the main character does meet a boy and engage in romantic relations with him, I did not feel as if it was the focus of the book. It's really a story about Ruby, a girl whose unreliable mother abandons her. She is then forced to go live with her older sister whom she has not seen or heard from in several years. The true focus of the story seems to be Ruby learning to trust and rely upon other people. The characters where slightly boring at times but likable at others. All in all, it was a pretty good book.
