Services
VITAL is a free community service of the Monroe County Public Library. VITAL offers trained volunteer tutors who provide:

  • Basic Literacy tutoring for adults who want improved reading, writing, comprehension, and basic math skills.
  • English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring for beginning ESL learners. (If available, tutors may be provided for more advanced English users.)
  • ESL Conversation Groups for learners to practice speaking and listening skills. ESL learners with intermediate or higher English conversation skills are invited to participate.

For Learners
VITAL provides student centered tutoring for adults with a variety of literacy goals.  Ability levels range from non-readers to "pretty good" readers, native speakers of English, and English as a second language.

For Prospective Tutors
Successful tutors are flexible, dependable, socially sensitive, and able to maintain confidentiality.  A positive attitude is the most important qualification. No experience necessary, training is provided. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete a tutor application and review tutor training opportunities.

Tutors are matched with learners based on the Criteria for Matching.  Volunteers are asked to commit to a 6 month minimum of tutoring from the time of match. Plan to spend 2-3 hours per week on lesson planning and tutoring activities.
