What services does VITAL offer?

How does VITAL work? This is a free community service sponsored by the Monroe County Public Library.

How much does it cost? Free. Materials and training are provided without charge to the volunteers and learners.

Who can learn? Any adult who didn't learn to read adequately and now wants to read well enough to deal with everyday needs and reach his/her literacy goals. Any adult who needs to improve ESL English language skills.

What kind of Learners? Adults who need help improving their reading, mathematics, and survival skills. Ability levels range from non-readers to "pretty good" readers, native speakers of English, and English as a second language.

Who can be a Tutor? Volunteers who want to help other adults gain reading, writing, and math literacy skills or English language skills.

Qualifications? A positive attitude and creative problem solving skills are most important.

Requirements and responsibilities?

Time? Tutors are expected to be available for initial training sessions and regular follow up sessions, as well as to schedule regular meetings with learners. Commitment to serve at least 6 months is required.

Job description? Through one-on-one tutoring, tutors furnish assistance and encouragement to out of school young people and adults with reading difficulties.
