VRP - Volunteer Reading Partners

VOLUNTEER READERS NEEDED VISUALLY IMPAIRED WELCOME
There is a great need for volunteers to work one-on-one with individuals who are blind or visually impaired. The VRP provides readers to make print material accessible
Volunteers receive orientation and training prior to assignment. Clients must meet with the VITAL Manager before being assigned a Reader.
Volunteer's weekly time commitment is 2 hours (minimum), and a long-term commitment of six months (minimum) Arrange a time to meet with your Reader
Volunteers are expected to maintain strict confidentiality. Clients are asked to inform their Reader or the VITAL office if arranged meetings cannot be attended

Volunteering and assisting individuals in one of the following activities could help make a difference in someone's life:
  • provide help to a person with reading, letter writing, and other personal business
  • read mail, printed instructions, and other materials and documents as required.
  • assist with bill paying and other written tasks
  • visit via the telephone on a regular basis, if needed
  • provide office assistance with follow-up phone calls, mailings, etc.,

JOB DESCRIPTION:
READING PARTNER
Provide reading assistance and encouragement to the blind and visually impaired.
QUALIFICATIONS: Any interested adult who is available to work with blind and visually impaired adults and can offer a supportive experience. A positive attitude and a strong interest are the most important qualifications.
REQUIREMENTS

  • Attend training and in-service sessions.
  • Provide help with reading, letter writing, and other personal business.
    • reading for pleasure
    • read mail, printed instructions, and other materials and documents as required.
    • assist with bill paying and other written tasks
    • visit via the telephone on a regular basis, if needed
    • provide office assistance with follow-up phone calls, mailings, etc.
  • Maintain regular weekly meetings.
  • Maintain positive relationship.
  • Maintain records to show meeting schedule and tasks performed.
  • Exchange information with Director and other Reading Partners at training sessions and in-services.
TIME REQUIREMENT: Volunteers are asked to commit to a long-term six months (minimum) assignment with an individual. Volunteer's weekly time commitment is 2 hours (minimum), and is mutually arranged between volunteer and the individual being served. Volunteers are expected to maintain strict confidentiality.
