Second Floor Improvements at the Main Library

Following the great response to our recent Community Survey, we’re upgrading your second floor experience at the Main Library. From the moment you arrive through checkout, you’ll soon enjoy enhanced access to the Library’s collections, our technology, and our staff—all in a more comfortable environment, thanks to an updated furniture and floor plan.

Modernized Furniture

Beautiful and functional, new second floor furniture is designed for the different ways you use your Library.

Soft, modern seating and smaller tables mean more relaxed reading and studying. Ergonomic computer stations offer more space and privacy for working alone—and a place to collaborate for group work.

Convenient Access to Collections

On the go, or staying a while: updates to the second floor’s layout accommodate your needs as you explore the diversity of our collections.

Soon, quick access to DVDs, New Arrivals, and Holds will be yours just inside the entranceway. A larger quiet reading area, complete with a revitalized fireplace, will be created when Magazines & Newspapers relocate outside the Silent Reading Room. Improvements to the Indiana Room will put local and regional information within easier reach. Newly installed lighting across the second floor vastly improves your collection browsing experience.

New Technologies to Serve You Better

An improved borrowing experience—made faster and more intuitive by the Library’s new self-checkout machines—also features one-stop reading recommendations, event announcements, and CloudLibrary eBook lending. You’ll also find device-charging stations and more accessible business centers with printers, copiers, and scanners for your use.

Enhanced Face-to-Face Access

To meet you where you need us most, we’re replacing the “one big desk” approach with more proactive customer service. Soon, three Information Desks will be conveniently located across the second floor, and Library staff, equipped with mobile computers, will be available to assist you in the stacks.

Improved Library Experience

These aren’t just planned enhancements to the Library’s second floor collections, services, and technologies—they’re anticipated improvements to your life, and to our community.

A cozy space for keeping up on current events, using a computer, or just enjoying a good book; making meaningful connections—on your own or with friends—through engaging activities in an open, welcoming environment; doing research with the help of a subject expert on our staff: access to these offerings in a modernized Library is part of what makes living and working in Monroe County a truly enriching experience.
