Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15–October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

National Hispanic Heritage Month was made official on August 17, 1988 by President Ronald Reagan, but observation of the month itself actually began in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson. September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico, Belize, and Chile also celebrate their independence in the month of September.
