A zine (/ziːn/ ZEEN; short for magazine or fanzine) is a small-circulation, self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images that often give voice to small, local underrepresented or marginalized communities. Zines are created and reproduced at a much smaller scale, and include everything from comics and DIY self-help guides to personal stories, nonfiction, and more.

Zines trace a long history, from their origins in 30s  sci-fi culture, through the punk culture of the 70s, and a resurgence in the 90s under riot grrrl, to today, where there are more voices and ideas being published than ever before. The Library’s zine collection covers a wide and diverse range of voices and topics from cooking and crafts, to psychology and politics. You can find it in The Commons on the second floor of the Downtown Library.

Interested in having your zine added to the collection? Submit a copy for consideration at any information desk.

 a call for submissions

During this period of social distancing, the Library invites you to contribute to making an online Quaranzine! The Library's Quaranzine is a community-response zine compiling our community's thoughts, feelings, and reactions surrounding the current situation of quarantine, social distancing, and living in these uncertain times.

Digital Zines for Quarantine

Digital Zines for Quarantine

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has deeply affected the world. During this difficult time of uncertainty and isolation, various communities have stepped up to help individuals out; especially through mutual aid, solidarity, and resource sharing. Whether it is information on safety, dealing with anxiety, or even DIY projects/recipes to keep busy, zines are a valuable resource.

Prisoner Support Zines

Prizon Support Zines

Prisoner support encompasses a variety of activities aimed a providing assistance to prisoners. There are a variety of ways to support prisoners: letter writing, visitations if possible, providing financial support, and, here in Monroe County, donating books for the jail library.

The Monroe County Public Library visits the county jail multiple times throughout the week, and circulates over 1,000 books a month to around 200 inmates. Each inmate has access to the library around once every three weeks.

Mental Health Zines

Mental Health Zines

Due to the prevalence and need for mental health services, and a general lack of them in many communities, zines on mental health serve a special need. Zines can help frame mental health in both a frank and gentle way, while also providing tips and encouragement for self-care. Many mental health zines are based around an individual's personal experience, so they provide a first-hand account of the associated trauma and healing processes.

Zines for Teens!

Zines for Teens

Zines are for everyone! And that means everyone: adults, teens, and even kids! Included in that are zines written for teens, as well as zines written by teens.

Young people making zines isn’t by any means a new pastime, it's a passion many have enjoyed for years. When you were in elementary or middle school you probably knew some budding young comic artist, if you were not one yourself, who produced and sold mini comic books. Those were zines, even if you didn’t call them that at the time.

Consent Zines

Consent Zines

Good consent is very important. Consent is a mutual verbal, physical, and emotional agreement that happens without manipulation, threats, or head games. As Project Respect states, “Everyone has the right to sexuality without violence and as part of that, positive sexuality begins with enthusiastic consent. This means being as excited and into someone else’s enjoyment as we are excited and into our own enjoyment.

Cooking Zines

Cooking Zines

Looking to change up your cooking routine? Add some new recipes to the ol’ repertoire? Some new culinary delights would be nice! You could turn to a conventional cookbook, but you’re likely to only find conventional foods there. No, what you need is something a little more cutting edge, a shake up in your giddy-up, some unconventional food for these unconventional times; what better place to look for this than in that most unconventional format: zines!
