A library is a place for collecting information and cataloging factual knowledge, but it is ooooh so much more. Your public library also is a place of wonder and discovery, a place to play and create; a place to exercise your reading or computing skills; use your imagination and develop new talents. This is the library we want children to experience this summer when we invite them to play our Summer Reading Game and “Find Your Superpower at the Library!” Read more about Find Your Superpower at the Library!
About this time of year, my colleagues and I begin to ponder just why it was we chose careers that see us at our busiest in the summer months -- at a time when it seems the rest of the world is looking to kick back and relax. Along with other public libraries around the country, we spend months planning and preparing a Summer Reading Program, we spend weeks visiting area schools and encouraging students in grades K-6 to participate in our Summer Reading Program, and then we have thousands of kids come through our doors eager to pick up a Summer Reading game board and attend special events. Why? Why do we do this? Couldn't we just quietly go about our business and slip away to the lake more easily in June? Read more about Summer Reading - Why it Matters
Don't forget - Summer Reading isn't just for kids! Though MCPL has a very popular and excellent reading program for kids from birth to 12, we have opportunities for teens and adults as well.
Teens ages 13-20 are able to participate in our Dream It - Do It Summer Reading Program. Teens can earn points by a combination of books read, programs attended, computer questions answered and/or book reviews written. Ten points earn the choice of a paperback book starting July 1. All entries will be saved for a grand prize drawing for one of two Kindle eBook readers later in August. Pick up a Teen Summer Reading Program Game Board at the Main Library, Ellettsville, or Bookmobile Information desks to learn more and get started!
Our Summer Reading Program has taken off like a rocket! Our theme this year is Dream Big: Read! -- a fun theme with many interpretations. Sometimes, you might want to read simply to escape into a dream world for a while. And, of course, your librarians will tell you that the ability to read gives you the ability to achieve your dreams, for learning to read enables you to read to learn. We are unabashed advocates of the notion that knowledge is power. Learning about something, learning how to do something can inspire and empower you to act, to do, to become!
