What Happened to Cass McBride?

Cass McBride is the girl that everyone wants to be like: she's smart, pretty, popular, and it seems her life is perfect. When social outcast David Kirby asks her out, she declines in the hope that if she does it politely enough, he will still vote for her for homecoming queen. Later on, she leaves a note for her friend entailing what she REALLY thinks of David, only for him to find it. This supposedly leads David to hang himself, pinning a note of his own to his body. Broken by the loss of his younger brother, Kyle Kirby plans revenge on Cass, who he believes is responsible for his brother's death, and does the unthinkable. Amidst his pain and poor psychological well-being, he kidnaps her, buries her alive. An air system barely keeps her breathing, which is enough for Kyle to torture her, via a walkie talkie that he has implanted in Cass's "grave". However, Cass knows her way with words, and may be able to save herself from her underground prison if she says the right things. But can she do it before it's too late? "What Happened to Cass McBride?" was an intense thriller that makes the reader keep turning pages, even if they desperately want to stop. Amazing.

Would you recommend this book?:
I would not recommend "What Happened to Cass McBride?" to claustrophobes, as many scenes were graphic and highly descriptive in nature. I am personally not claustrophobic, yet I shook as I read this book. I believe that this book was amazing, but frightening, so I would recommend it to anyone and everyone that can handle it.

"Lyra's Oxford" reviewed by Colin on June 23, 2009

Lyra's Oxford
Author:
Phillip Pullman
Genre:
fantasy
Write a review of the book, including plot points, if you wish:
Every author writes award winning books, and then they hit a dead end. This book, I think, clearly shows that for Phillip Pullman. I think the story had a good plot, but failed when I found out how short the book actually took to read. It only took me twenty minutes to read. If the book would have been longer, with more details about the plot, then it would have been good, but this book was only 49 pages! I am very disappointed. The storyline wasn't long either. Lyra and Pan needed to help a daemon find someone to heal his witch-human, so they helped the daemon. When they find the man, the witch attemps to kill Lyra for some reason, they kill the witch, the end. I think Pullman could have added something to the book to really drag readers into the book. This book did not do that.

No. The lack of details and length of the story really made this book Pullman's worst book for kids.

Wizard of Earthsea is about a boy, really, named Ged. He is taken as an old wizard's apprentice, but his talents exceed what the old wizard can teach him. Ged goes to an island known for teaching wizards, and he invokes something from the dark side of the world. This book is about Ged trying to get rid of this creature he summoned, and suceeding, but did not come away from it without a lesson learned. This book was my favorite out of all the others Ursula has written.
