Active Living Coalition

The Active Living Coalition is comprised of individuals and organizations in Bloomington that represent all areas of fitness, wellness, nutrition and active living. Active Living Coalition members include representatives from health care, health and nutrition education, city and county parks and recreation departments, businesses with focus on fitness, wellness and active living and service organizations that promote healthy, active lifestyles throughout the Bloomington community.

What We Do:

Improve overall health and wellness by developing educational materials and coordinating health events

Develop walking guides for Bloomington's trails and streets

Coordinate community walks and health fairs

Write and submit grants

Compile wellness resources to post on our site

Host employee wellness policy workshops

The Active Living Coalition is open to all who have a passion for improving health and wellness of people who live, work and visit Monroe County. Participation ranges from keeping abreast of activities and events to participating in and leading collaborative projects.

We meet the first Thursday of each month from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room at the I.U. Health Bloomington Community Health Office located at 333 East Miller Drive, Bloomington, Indiana .

Alpine Ski Club

Description

The Alpine Ski Club is a dynamic organization dedicated to the enjoyment of winter sports such as alpine skiing and snow boarding, good fellowship among skiers and friends, and activities that bring members together throughout the year.

 

Incorporated in Bloomington, Indiana in 1981 as a non-profit organization, the Alpine Ski Club has drawn its membership from as far away as Glacier, Montana. Members have ranged in age from 20s through 70s. And member backgrounds are just as diverse as their ages. The club sponsors spring break (and an occasional January or February) trip to the Rockies or Europe, day and weekend trips in the mid-west, and "ski nights" at our local resort - Paoli Peaks, Indiana. The ASC is now a member of the Ohio Valley Ski Council, so our members can participate in other OVSC events and its club's trips and racing competitions.

Bloomington based group that focuses on providing bicycle transportation. Services include the following:

  • bikes for sale: we sell gently used bikes at bargain prices
  • earn-a-bike program: participants can receive a bicycle after volunteering their time in our shop
  • advocacy: we support alternative forms of transportation; we support the reuse and recycling of bicycles
  • workshops & classes: we offer unique bike maintence workshops and classes for children and adults
  • open shop: we make our tools available to the public
  • bike distribution: we give away one free bike a month for qualified applicants
  • art: we weld old bike parts to make bike racks, tables, or sculptures

Bloomington Fools Hash House Harriers

Description

The hash is a non-competitive social club that meets to run, jog, or walk a four to six mile cross-country trail. The trails, set up by different hashers each week, traverse obstacles designed to slow down the hashers--including creeks, mud, sewers, tunnels, brambles, shopping malls, etc. Following the hash trail there is a brief ceremony welcoming new hashers and marking how many trails members have completed.

Bloomington Walking Club

The Bloomington Walking Club, presented by Bloomington Parks and Recreation, IU Health Bloomington, and Purdue Extension of Monroe County, is an informal group that walks from one to three miles on paved paths and natural trails in and around city parks. Griffy Lake Nature Preserve is 1,179 acres off North Dunn Street, with a 109 acre lake. The boathouse is located at 3300 N. Headley Road. Scenic woodlands teem with wild flora and fauna Nature Preserve. Swimming is prohibited in the lake, and to protect wildlife, all dogs must remain leashed while in the preserve.
