Hoosier Chess Academy (HCA)

Description: 
Formerly the Bloomington Indiana Scholastic Chess Club (BISCC).
 
Hoosier Chess Academy is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization for young chess enthusiasts who are interested in competitive chess and skill building. In addition to chess skills, we also emphasize good citizenship, sportsmanship and leadership. HCA is a USCF Affiliate.

The Library chapter meets at the Monroe County Public Library on 1st and 3rd Sundays and is open to all children in grades K-12.

Library Chapter

When: 1:30 – 3:30 pm, 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month during the school year and once a month during the summer months.

Where: Rooms 1B and 1C of the Monroe County Public Library, Downtown Library, 303 E. Kirkwood Ave. Activities for meetings:

1. Lessons taught by experienced local and out-of-town chess coaches
2. Competitive chess ladder games and games with skilled guest players from the Bloomington chess community
3. Information and preparation for upcoming tournaments

Parents must leave a contact phone number for any participating child; Library chapter participants 3rd grade and younger must be accompanied by an adult. To ensure that we provide an enjoyable and learning environment for everyone, we may request players that do not exhibit appropriate behavior to leave a meeting.

To ensure coherence among players, membership with a reasonable fee amount is required for participation beginning in October.

Indiana Legal Services (ILS) is a nonprofit law firm that provides free civil legal assistance to eligible low-income people throughout the state of Indiana. ILS helps clients who are faced with legal problems that harm their ability to have such basics as food, shelter, income, medical care or personal safety. Most of the cases ILS handles are cases such as family law where there is domestic violence, housing, consumer law, access to health care, and access to government benefits. Mobility Aids Lending Library (MALL)

Description: 

The Mobility Aids Lending Library (MALL) is an initiative started by a local group of women with physical disabilities (aka "the Wheelie Women") to serve the greater Bloomington community.  The MALL program matches "gently used" mobility devices free of charge to those who cannot afford them or only need them for a short period of time.  Items may include: canes, crutches, walkers, rollators, and wheelchairs (both manual and powered).

 

Monroe County Public Library is providing free used canes, crutches, walkers and rollators to the public for checkout during regular library hours. Other mobility aids, such as wheelchairs and powered devices, may be available from other MALL partners. Learn more about this Library service.

Monroe County 4-H Junior Leaders

Leaders is open to youth who are in grades 7 through 12 as of January 15 of the current year. The Monroe County Saddle Club consists of 65 acres, 44 of which are in the Classified Forest. There are approximately 6 miles of trails on the property. The barn has 30 stalls for boarding with 6 acres of pasture, an indoor arena and an outdoor arena. Membership in the club gives you access to all facilities and trails.

Mother Hubbard's Cupboard

Description: 

Mother Hubbard's Cupboard (The Hub) is a local community food resource center providing a low-barrier and client choice food pantry and education programming, with additional programming for children. The Hub does not require income verification or proof of residency in Monroe County to use the food pantry or attend any of our programming. Anyone is welcome to use our services and programming. The Hub's pantry is open Tuesday-Thursday 12-6 pm. The pantry is set up like a grocery store where patrons can come and choose what they want and however much they want for their household. There are no quantity limits on any item nor are there limits on how many days a week patrons can visit. All people are required to wear masks inside the building. Picking up boxes without coming inside to shop is also available. There are volunteer opportunities in both the food pantry and garden spaces.

New Hope Family Shelter

Description: 

New Hope Family Shelter’s mission is to provide temporary shelter for homeless families in Bloomington and Monroe County and, in collaboration with other agencies, to help those families regain housing by addressing the problems that led to homelessness.
