In the spring of 2009, Monroe County Public Library, in cooperation with the Monroe County History Center, were awarded a grant to research, catalogue and ultimately digitize various photographs, letters, newspaper clippings, business records and other ephemera relating to the Matthews Brothers Stone Company, a limestone quarry which operated out of Ellettsville, Indiana from 1862 to 1978.

Though especially concerned with the Matthews Brothers Stone Company, the project seeks to uncover the development of the Indiana limestone industry across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Whether through the eyes of stone cutters and quarry workers or through the lens of traditional or modern technologies, these images offer us a fresh look at this unique part of Indiana history and culture through a variety of perspectives.

While the project's stated goal is to fill in some information gaps regarding the Indiana limestone industry and promote the heritage of Indiana limestone, the team has enjoyed new cooperation with local community and cultural organizations, especially MCPL and the Monroe County History Center. Just as important, the Library also improved its capacity for digitization to meet community, state and library needs.

Whether you have some personal connection to the images contained in this collection, have a longstanding interest in Indiana's limestone heritage or visit the site out of sheer curiosity, we hope you have as much fun exploring these images as we did!
