Bloomington has many different Civic Organizations, charitable groups whose purpose is to educate and promote community welfare and social causes. These organizations engage in many different aims, and work with our community to help it grow. These are some of these organizations working to improve our community today. Bloomington Peace Action Coalition

The Bloomington Peace Action Coalition strives to educate the community about war, peace and U.S. foreign policy, demilitarization, and humanitarian issues. It strives to empower people to take action in response to this information and become advocates for legislative progress.

City of Bloomington Volunteer Network

The City of Bloomington Volunteer Network is your one-stop source for volunteer information in Bloomington and Monroe County. We invite you to connect to your community through volunteering to "be the change!" Search for volunteer opportunities.

Mission: The City of Bloomington Volunteer network exists to mobilize volunteers to address community issues and build on community assets.

Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County

Created by individuals, families, and businesses who share a passion for Monroe County and a vision for its future, the Community Foundation has granted $21 million to more than 380 local nonprofit organizations. Our $26 million endowment is growing and so is the difference we make by connecting caring people, important cuases, and community resources.

League of Women Voters of Bloomington-Monroe County

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through advocacy and education. Membership is open to men and women 16 and older.

Monroe County Community Justice and Mediation Center

CJAM is a nonprofit community agency serving Monroe County, Indiana and the surrounding counties of southern Indiana. The mission of CJAM is to promote a civil and just community through mediation, education, and restorative justice. We envision a fair community that learns from conflict, prevents harm, and grows in understanding.

 

  Social and Racial Justice

Council for Community Accessibility CCA

The Council for Community Accessibility (CCA) is a volunteer group that advocates for the interests of people with disabilities. Formerly known as the Community Council on Handicap Concerns, the group was formed in 1990. The CCA promotes awareness of the challenges faced by people with disabilities, and works to develop solutions to problems of accessibility in the community.

Lakota Language Consortium

The Lakota Language Consortium (LLC, The Consortium) is one of the foremost Native American language organizations in the country. A nonprofit organization made up of Native community leaders, linguists and volunteers, its primary mission is the complete revitalization of the Lakota language, one of only a small handful of Native American languages left that has a significant chance of survival.

Women Writing for (a) Change

The Bloomington affiliate of Women Writing for (a) Change is an emerging school which supports the lives of women for whom writing is, or is becoming, an important creative and spiritual practice. The mission of the school has always been to create a healthy, creatively-charged writing community that celebrates the voices of women (and men in select offerings) in search of authenticity, deeper consciousness, healing, personal transformation and re-connection.

 

  Food Security/Justice

Community Kitchen of Monroe County, Inc

501(c)3 Hunger Relief agency providing free meals to anyone in need from two locations, from 4-6 pm, M-Sat, and outreach programs to the community's most vulnerable: children, older adults, and the chronically ill.

La Leche League

The mission is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and the mother.

Mother Hubbard's Cupboard

Mother Hubbard's Cupboard (The Hub) is a local community food resource center providing a low-barrier and client choice food pantry and education programming, with additional programming for children. The Hub does not require income verification or proof of residency in Monroe County to use the food pantry or attend any of our programming. Anyone is welcome to use our services and programming. The Hub's pantry is open Tuesday-Thursday 12-6 pm. The pantry is set up like a grocery store where patrons can come and choose what they want and however much they want for their household. There are no quantity limits on any item nor are there limits on how many days a week patrons can visit. All people are required to wear masks inside the building. Picking up boxes without coming inside to shop is also available. There are volunteer opportunities in both the food pantry and garden spaces.

Sycamore Land Trust

Sycamore Land Trust is a nonprofit conservation organization that protects important natural areas and family farms in 26 southern Indiana counties. We are member supported. Many of our preserves are open to the public for hiking and bird watching, and we offer environmental education activities, events, and volunteer opportunities.
