Language Learning Your Way

Learning a language for the first time, or brushing up on one you already know—the Library has all you need to make your journey as easy as possible. We offer a variety of resources, including books, audiobooks, apps, and in-person classes, to meet the needs of different learning styles (including for people learning English, through VITAL, the Library's adult education unit).
When it comes to language-learning from books, we certainly have many on our shelves to choose from. Check out our lesson books on many different languages, including Japanese, Spanish, American Sign Language, and others.
And if audio lessons are more your style, we offer lots of those on CD. This isn't just someone reading you a textbook, either—they're formatted audio lessons, designed to help you learn a language quickly and easily.
For those who already have a grasp of the basics and want to dive a little bit deeper into a language, I encourage you to check out the Library's foreign language materials. Our Spanish Language and Asian Language collections, for example, offer a great selection of fiction and nonfiction books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, and CDs to immerse yourself in and help you hone your skills.
We also have several online resources to help you on your language-learning quest. Mango Languages is available through the Library's website and their app, and has courses on over 70 different languages. We also offer access to Rosetta Stone courses for 30 different languages through Inspire, Indiana's Virtual Library. Of course Overdrive (Indiana Digital Library), available through our website or their app, has a collection of foreign language study eBooks and eAudiobooks available, as well as a collection of fiction eBooks in foreign languages.
The Library offers language learning programs based on the availability of presenters. Search the Library calendar for current class offerings.
