Everything is interconnected, therefore if the case you are working on isn't getting anywhere, follow the first person you see who seems to know where they are going and the likelihood is you will arrive at the place you need to be. This is the philosophy of "Dirk Gently" a short run BBC Four series based on the book "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" by Douglas Adams.

Those of you familiar with Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" and the numerous spin-offs and remakes might expect to see some very strange things indeed in Dirk Gently. You would not be disappointed. However Dirk Gently does not provide you with one joke after another, but a different way of thinking. With billions and billions of interconnecting threads in the universe everything relates to everything else. The trick is to see how. Dirk, played by Stephen Mangan, is a sort of gritty, educated philosopher, who reminds me of Manard G. Krebbs from the 1950's television series "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" who was allergic to "work" mixed with Gilligan, from "Gilligan's Island" (incidentally both roles were played by Bob Denver). Dirk is lazy, educated, clumsy and careless, yet somehow everything works out, to everyone's amazement. Dirk somehow manages to solve every case, unfortunately usually in a way that results in him not getting paid, thus he is often on the run from creditors and in debt to his secretary and best friend.

BBC Four is not known for its big budget programs and the lack of budget does show through the seams. In fact everything seems a little seamy in this show. However by watching you might just understand Schrodinger's paradox. ... or not.
