The Human Library
The Human Library® is Saturday, April 2, 2022 from 1–3 PM in the Atrium of the Downtown Library. Designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue, The Human Library® is an event in which difficult questions are expected, appreciated, and answered.
Individuals volunteer as human books and participants become readers during short one-on-one conversations aimed to create dialogue and understanding between people.
Human book experiences are based around race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, occupation, cultural background, age, gender orientation, ethnicity, social status, and/or lifestyle choices. Conversations take place in a safe and neutral space.
The Human Library® provides an opportunity for the community to share and understand the experiences of others in their community. This year's human book titles include:
- Active-Duty Military Spouse
- Addict
- Autistic Woman
- Black / Queer / Trans / Non-Binary
- First-Generation Immigrant
- Formerly Incarcerated / Tattoos
- Lesbian / Pastor Turned Atheist / Mom to a Transgender Son
- Pagan / Domestic Violence Survivor / Legal Escort Service Owner
- Stage 4 Illness
- Unhoused
Applications to volunteer to be a Human Book are now closed. We look forward to seeing you at the event!
