The book tells of a love story that is as the title says, bitter and sweet. Henry Lee, a Chinese boy, meets Keiko Okabe, a Japanese girl, at an all-white, elementary school in the middle of World War 2. They quickly become close friends and the ir relationship keeps drawing them closer and closer because of the bullies at school, the town, and even in the government. When Keiko is moved further and further away, their relationship dwindles to just a few heartfelt letters sent, but event that eventually stops. Forty years later, possessions from "the war years" are found in a time capsule underneath Panama Hotel, and an old spark of hope is relit in Henry's heart. He discovers his "holy grail" and some of the Okave's belongings within the piles. This eventually leads him on a path to meet his lost love.
