Pony

Pony

When Silas's father is taken away in the middle of the night by a group of outlaws who seem to mistaken him for someone else, Silas knows he has to do something. With his best friend, a ghost named Mittenwool, Silas heads out to rescue his pa while riding his beautiful bald-faced pony. Will Silas be able to rescue his pa? And what's so special about his pony? Read this book to find out!

I didn't know too much about this book before I started reading it and thought it would be a horse story more than anything else, but there is so much more going on here; it kept me guessing and surprised me! I also loved the daguerreotypes leading each chapter and feel these and the discussions of photography throughout the book would make this a great read for anyone interested in photography and history! Recommended for readers age 10 and up.

Story Summary:
Join Silas Bird as he searches for his father, Martin Bird - or, as the most notorious criminal says, Mac Boat. Silas will embark on the most dangerous journey of his life with a bald-faced pony, his ghost-companion Mittenwool, and other trusting friends - maybe even farmers or police - as they voyage across forests and swamps to free him from a gang of counterfeiters. Will they be too late? What else will they have to sacrifice? And - who will make it alive to tell the tale?
Write Your Review:
This book caught my eye because of two features. First, the words "PONY" were printed bold red on the cover, along with a striking horse with sky-blue eyes. Those who know me well know that I have a soft spot for horses or equine animals, so this book was an immediate hold on my library account. Second, the author is R. J. Palacio. Seriously. R. J. Palacio! The famous author who wrote the award-winning book and movie, Wonder. If the picture and title alone isn't going to convince one to read this book, the author definitely will. I will admit that, at first, I was bored of the first few chapters and kind of skipped around a lot in the beginning. That's probably why, at first, I had no clue who - or what - Mittenwool was. The first thought I had about him was, "Cool! Big brother or something. Maybe even a mitten?" However, as the book progresses, you will quite regret skipping around in the beginning - Mittenwool proves to be a very centered character, and might even make you get a little emotional from his past history. This book is truly a masterpiece - heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. I hope you all will enjoy Pony as much as I did. P.S. Don't read this near bedtime, you will lie awake wondering what will happen next. Every single line is a cliffhanger. I know this because I have personal experience of making up possibilities of what will happen next to Silas. Six stars guaranteed!
