Volunteer Opportunities

Free one-on-one tutoring for adults is provided by trained volunteers. Topics include reading, writing, math, and English-language skills. Tutors can also help learners prepare for the high school equivalency exam (TASC), driver's license test, and citizenship test.

VITAL's volunteer tutors help thousands of adults attain greater life success through literacy. New tutors attend orientation and training sessions prior to meeting with their assigned learner. All volunteer tutors must be 18 years of age or older.

Tutors are responsible for creating lesson plans and facilitating weekly tutoring sessions. They should plan to spend 2–3 hours per week on tutoring activities, including a minimum of 1.5 hours of tutoring itself, plus additional time for lesson planning.

To get started, please register for VITAL volunteer orientation.

If you cannot attend an orientation on any of the listed dates, please email vital [at] mcpl.info.

After orientation, tutors select from the following area(s) of interest and attend related training sessions:

  • Ready to Read: for adults who want to learn or improve their reading and writing skills (may also include basic math)
  • English Language Essentials: for English-language learners who want to improve their reading, writing, speaking, or listening skills
  • High School Equivalency/Math: for adults who want to take their high school equivalency exam (TASC), focusing on fractions, decimals, geometry, and algebra (may also include essay writing and reading comprehension)
  • Computer Basics: for adults who need help with online job search activities, resume writing, and basic computer skills

Once trained, tutors will be matched with a learner based on their mutual availability and learning preferences.

VITAL tutors agree to:

  • Meet in a public location (not a private residence)
  • Schedule and keep weekly tutoring sessions
  • Contact their learner in advance if they must cancel
  • Set goals and work towards them (a 6-month time commitment is suggested)
  • Be prepared for sessions
