Volunteer Opportunities

VITAL's volunteer tutors help thousands of adults attain greater life success through literacy. New tutors attend orientation and training sessions prior to meeting with their assigned learner. Tutors create lesson plans and facilitate weekly tutoring sessions. Plan to spend 2-3 hours per week on tutoring activities, including a minimum of 1 ½ hours of tutoring plus additional time for lesson planning. Tutoring sessions take place at MCPL or other approved tutoring location. Six month minimum time commitment strongly suggested.

To get started, please register for VITAL Volunteer Orientation.

After Orientation, tutors select from the following area(s) of interest and attend related training sessions:
  • Ready to Read for adults who want to learn or improve their reading and writing skills. May include basic math.
  • English Language Essentials for English language learners who want to improve their reading, writing, speaking, or listening skills.
  • High School Equivalency/Math for adults who want to obtain their HSE. Focus on fractions, decimals, geometry and algebra. May include essay writing and reading comprehension.
  • Computer Basics for adults who need help with online job search activities, resume writing, and basic computer skills.

Once trained, tutors are matched according to their availability and areas of interest.
