Ever wonder whether you are really getting the best info when you search Google? Does your teacher tell you NOT TO USE THE INTERNET when you do research? If the answer to these questions is yes, then try our E-Reference Library!

What is it?

Your library has always been the best place to find reliable, up to date information for research papers, assignments and general interest. We choose encyclopedias and reference books that we know will do the job and we make them easy to get to online. Our E-Reference Library is a great collection of reliable resources you can use from home. If you have a school assignment that requires looking up information on a topic, you should use our E-Reference Library.

How do you get to all this great stuff?

All you need is your library card! You can pick individual books to use, or you can just search across the entire collection. Each article or topical summary provides valuable information AND will give you the appropriate citation from the source. That’s important because teachers want to know what reference books you are using and the citation will show them that you used something better than Wikipedia.

But doesn’t this count as “using the Internet”?

No. The sources in the E-Reference Library are not available on the open web. These are purchased by the library for you to use. The books included in the E-Reference Library are reliable and reputable sources that have been published regularly for many years. The only difference is that you can use them online!

Consumer Reports

Are you in the market for a new washing machine or maybe even a new car? Not sure which model will be the better buy? The library offers a powerful consumer research tool by providing you access to the Consumer Reports website. ConsumerReports.org provides members with access to expert, unbiased ratings of over 5,000 products. The website also provides product reviews, expert buying advice, product comparisons, and reviews from other users like you. ConsumerReports.org reviews include cars, household appliances, electronics, home and garden products, and products for your kids and babies.

Do you want to keep up on the latest consumer product news such as recalls and safety tips? ConsumerReports.org has the most current relevant news always displayed on its homepage. You can also sign up for the free email newsletter. Consumer Reports operates the world’s largest product testing and research lab. On the website you can read or watch videos of how they conduct their many different tests. Try Out Our Temporary Scanner!

The Ellettsville Branch is testing out scanning options for patron use. We'll have this scanner for one month to see if it suits our needs, so come try it out! This scanner can scan photos, documents, newspaper clippings, etc. all from the simple touch menu! You can save the files to a flash drive or email them to yourself. After you've scanned, please fill out one of our survey forms and let us know what you think!

There's Monsters and Then There's Monsters

Horror fiction: There're a lot of arguments about what it is and isn't – it's bloody; it doesn't have to be bloody. It's supernatural, like werewolves and ghosts; it can have just people – they're scary enough. Young minds aren't the only things blooming at the Branch!

Visit the Children's Room at the Ellettsville Branch and you will see our violets love the space as do families. Sit in a window seat to read together or play with blocks or train table in this special space. Many children enjoy the room before and after our programs. The NEW BROCHURE is now available in the library and sign-ups can be made through our website.

Summer Reading, no matter what format, was a hit at the Branch!

At the Ellettsville Branch, 991 children enrolled in the Summer Reading program and 605 completed the program by making it to level five and claiming their last prize! So whether you read ebooks, print, or both like this recent visitor, keep reading!

Reads that Rhyme

We're into the second full week of "A Cool Book and a Cold Beverage," MCPL's Adult Summer Reading Program. Participants can read books from any of six categories and fill out entry forms online or in the library to win prizes. Last week, Andrea suggested books to read for the "Hoosier Connections" category. This week, I'm highlighting "Reads That Rhyme." All of these books can be found at the Ellettsville Branch.
