The Farmer's Wife

This films the life of Juanita and Darrel Buschkoetter, a young Nebraska farming couple, as they face problems with their finances and marriage. Without a narrator, the story is told entirely in the husband and wife's own words, resonating with millions of viewers when it originally aired, over three nights, on PBS's Frontline.

Grey Gardens

Mother Edith Beale and daughter Edith Beale; 'Big Edie' and 'Little Edie', relatives of former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, live as recluses in a run-down mansion in the wealthy Hamptons area of New York. The film follows their day-to-day activities as they live among the squalor. The 'direct cinema' approach used by the Maysles allowed for the women to tell their own stories and shape the direction of the film.

The Maysles' earlier film Salesman, about door-to-door Bible salesman, is perhaps as equally/more compelling.

While obviously no one should praise Riefenstahl for the influence her filmmaking brought to Nazi Germany, here her talent, also debatably still under that political lens, is focused on capturing the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Many groundbreaking cinematic techniques were seen here that would only later be more widely used. Perhaps most retrospectively notable is her not including Hitler's reaction to seeing African-American track athlete Jesse Owens set a world-record in the long jump after Germany's Luz Long had just made its own record-setting one. For those not up to watching all three-and-a-half-hours of this, check out the documentary The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl (that includes clips from this and her other work).

Based on the Pierre Boulle novel, this David Lean adventure epic was written by uncredited, blacklisted screenwriters Carl Foreman and Michael Wilson (who were eventually given posthumous credit for the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar it won in 1958), revolves around British POWs in a Japanese prison camp who are forced to work on the construction of the Burma Railway (against Geneva conventions). While a fictional story, the real-life POWs it is based on were subjected to far harsher conditions than the movie depicts.

A personal '90s favorite where Parker Posey's character works at a library to work off bail money given to her by her librarian godmother and begins thinking about pursuing it as a career. This film is perhaps most notable for the meltdown scene where she snarkily yells at a library patron for putting a book in the wrong place!

Hero
Adult Audiovisual DVD - Her

A Chinese wuxia film set during the Warring States period. Actors Jet Li and Donnie Yen are both former Wushu champions. The film has a strikingly changing visual pallette and, as Roger Ebert wrote, "demonstrates how the martial arts genre transcends action and violence and moves into poetry, ballet and philosophy". This was the first Chinese-language film to open #1 at the American box office.
