Automatic Renewals

General Information

What is automatic renewal (auto-renewal)?

Physical items checked out from the Library now renew automatically. Our computers check your account for eligible items and renew them two days before they're due—extending their loan periods from their original due dates.

Which Library items automatically renew?

Most physical items checked out from the Library (books, audiobooks, music CDs, DVDs) are eligible for up to two auto-renewals.

Which Library items DO NOT automatically renew?

The following are not eligible for auto-renewal:

  • Items that have reached their renewal limit
  • Items someone else has requested to borrow (items with a hold)
  • Downloadable and streaming materials (eBooks, eMagazines, eMovies, etc.)
  • Bestseller Express items
  • Items checked out by the hour (laptops, game controllers, etc.)
  • Book Club Kits
  • Outreach Preschool Kits

Can I opt out of auto-renewal?

At this time, there is no option to turn off or otherwise opt out of auto-renewal.

How does auto-renewal calculate the length of my borrowing periods?

Although auto-renewals occur shortly before items are due, auto-renewed due dates are calculated from the original due dates, not from the date of notification.

Example: You borrow a Library item with a three-week checkout. Two days before the item is due, you receive notification of an auto-renewal on that item. The new due date is now three weeks after the item's original due date (i.e., three weeks plus two days).

What if I still want to renew eligible items myself in My Account?

Short answer: you can—there are currently no changes to the manual renewal system in My Account > My Checkouts & Renewals—but there's no longer any need to.

How can I send a comment to the Library about the auto-renewal system?

We welcome your feedback! Please use our online comment form to send us a comment or question.

Notifications

How and when am I notified of an auto-renewal?

Auto-renewal notices are automatically sent via email and text. If you've provided an email address or text number in My Account > My Checkouts & Renewals, you should be receiving notifications. If you're not for some reason, please contact the Library via chat or email, or call (812) 349-3050.

As always, due dates of all borrowed Library items (including auto-renewed items) are found in My Account > My Checkouts & Renewals.

What information is in an auto-renewal notification?

Emailed auto-renewal notifications include which items were and were NOT eligible for auto-renewal, and the due dates for each item. Text notifications indicate only that one or more items has been auto-renewed.

What if I'm not receiving auto-renewal notifications via email or text?

Be sure you've provided a valid email address or text number at My Account > Contact Information. If you've provided at least one of those, but still aren't getting auto-renewal notifications, please contact the Library via chat or email, or call (812) 349-3050.

Will I still be notified when items NOT eligible for renewal are almost due?

Yes. Look for notification of these items as you normally would.

Manual Renewals

Is the option to renew items myself in My Account gone?

No. There are currently no changes to the manual renewal system in My Account > My Checkouts & Renewals. However, there's no longer a need to use manual renewal (see below).

When would I HAVE to manually renew an item in My Account?

Never.

When would I WANT to manually renew an item in My Account?

If renewing items yourself helps you have a better Library experience, be our guest! At the system level, however, there's no real benefit to manual renewals—they won't give you more chances to renew, or longer borrowing periods.
