The center's mission encompassed archival, pedagogical, and research goals in the field of oral history, with particular emphasis on the history of Indiana and the Midwest, and to address the growing interdisciplinary field of memory studies, of which oral history is one important facet. The Center for the Study of History and Memory continues to build upon its work in the field of oral history while broadening the range of its research projects to address the many ways that people remember, represent, and use the past in public and private life.

Constellation Stage & Screen produces world-class theater and film that impacts the national performing arts industry through new work development. Constellation's productions, community events, and education programs serve as a leading contributor to the cultural and economic vibrancy of Bloomington, Indiana.

Established in 2022 as a result of a three way merger between the Bloomington Playwright’s Project, Cardinal Stage, and Pigasus Institute, Constellation produces a professional theatrical season featuring an exciting mix of original plays and musicals, established works, family and holiday classics, and theater for young audiences shows. Throughout the year, Constellation seeks to develop and produce multiple film projects and over time will create a new work development pipeline where projects can progress from page, to stage, to screen!

Constellation aims to have a deep and lasting impact on our community and region through its IU Credit Union Education and Outreach Initiative. Constellation's educational offerings seek to nurture a love of the performing arts in students of all ages in South Central Indiana by offering classes and experiential learning for everyone, from the youngest beginner to the adult professional.

Creature Comforts

Creature Comforts is a group of volunteers who make and sell small quilts for pets (or for babies or to use as wall hangings). Money raised by the sale of the quilts goes to the Monroe County Humane Association and to the Cincinnati Zoo Angel fund which buys habitat for cheetahs. Quilts are displayed and sold at Bloomington Veterinary Hospital on Smith Road.

Friday Musicale

Description

The Friday Musicale meets 6 times a year on the 2nd Friday of the month at 1:15 p.m. October-April (except January). They are affiliated with the National Federation of Music Clubs and Indiana Arts Festival. They sponsor a Junior Festival for pre-college students on the 2nd Saturday in May at the Jacobs School.

 

Organized in 1905, Friday Musicale is federated with the National and Indiana Federation of Music Clubs.

The National Federation of Music Clubs, founded in 1898, is now the world’s largest philanthropic music organization supporting American music and musicians. It is one fo three organizations to be chartered by the United States Congress and the only music organization member of the United Nations. There are six thousand NFMC-related organizations and music clubs nationally. Members are professional and amateur musicians, composers, dancers, performing artists, arts and music educators, students, generous benefactors, and music lovers who are interested in creating a dynamic musical and cultural environment in their communities.

Through the efforts of Eli Lilly and Indiana University, the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology was dedicated as an independent research facility with the Indiana University community in 1971. In addition to curating Eli Lilly's archaeological collection and the records and collections from Glenn Black's excavations at the Angel Mounds site, the Glenn A. Black Laboratory also curates over 10,000 collections, made up of millions of individual artifacts, representing over four decades of archaeological research in every county in Indiana and at significant sites throughout the Midwest.

The Mathers Museum of World Cultures offers research and training opportunities for IU students, educational support and services for IU faculty and elementary/ secondary school teachers, and family-friendly exhibits and programs. Admission to the museum and its programs is free. During normal hours of operation the Mathers Museum exhibition hall and Museum store are open Tuesday through Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays, from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Free visitor parking is avaliable by the Indiana Avenue lobby entrance. Metered parking is available at the McCalla School Parking lot on the corner of Ninth Street and Indiana Avenue. The parking lot also has spaces designated for Indiana University C and E permits. During the weekends, free parking is avaliable on the surrounding streets.
