Since 1917, the Monroe County Chapter of the American Red Cross has provided disaster relief, services to Armed Forces, emergency preparedness and lifesaving programs to Bloomington and the surrounding communities. Today we serve residents in both Monroe and neighboring Owen County 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This congressionally-mandated service not only applies to major national tragedies but also to single-family incidents, generally fire, flood or tornadoes. Typically Red Cross responds by purchasing food, new clothing and providing shelter for families to help meet immediate emergency needs.

Area 10 Agency on Aging is a private, not-for-profit corporation serving older adults in Monroe and Owen Counties. We are the tenth of sixteen Area Agencies on Aging in Indiana. Our mission is to improve the quality of life and celebrate the independence, health, and dignity of all older adults. The following services are available for persons in the Monroe and Owen County area who are 60 or older or who are disabled:

The Futures Family Planning Clinic provides family planning health services for adolescents and adults. Affordable services and supplies are available on sliding fee schedule based on income. Insurance and Medicaid are accepted, and appointments are preferred. Walk-ins are accepted ONLY if an appointment time is available. A Spanish-speaking medical interpreter is available by appointment only.

HoosierRx is a state program that uses money from a tobacco lawsuit to assist low-income older adults buy prescription drugs. See FSSA or HoosierRX website for eligibilty requirements.

IU Health Bloomington Hospital Community Health offers a wide variety of programs and services to the community.

From our work with the local school systems, to programs that help those living with HIV/AIDS and Alzheimer’s disease, our goal is to help our community live healthier.

The mission is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and the mother.

With professional care centers in Bedford and Bloomington, our short and long-term accommodations include personalized nursing services, specialty Alzheimer's care, and various forms of recreational and physical therapy. We also offer a sophisticated aquatic therapy program, featuring the state-of-the-art HydroWorx 2000 therapy pool.

WIC provides Federal grants to States for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.

Parish Nurse Program is coordinated through Bloomington Hospital. The program endeavors to work with church congregations and other area agencies to promote a healthier community. Primary roles are that of educator and personal health counselor. Also check out www.parishnurses.org. 

Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky is uniquely suited to carry out its mission: to protect, provide and promote reproductive health. Focused on helping women and men make lifelong responsible and informed choices, Planned Parenthood's services overwhelmingly focus on prevention.

The medical staff provide safe, confidential health care--including Pap tests for cervical cancers, breast exams, and screenings and treatment for sexually transmitted infections.

Tandem is a community birth center starting in Bloomington, IN. We intend to be a resource and support to perinatal people in Monroe County as well as the surrounding counties. We are a non-profit dedicated to offering medical care from puberty to menopause and supporting the perinatal community.
